Career Center Resources

Name: Amanda Lehn
Year: ‘09
Internship Site: Hershey Philbin Associates

C2007 Steve Kownacki

The Internship: “I first noticed the internship opportunity on DickinsonConnect. I then was fortunate enough to attend the Student Employment & Internship Fair at Dickinson in the spring and actually meet Megan Kurtz. The internship fair was really great because it gave me an opportunity to present myself face to face along with my resume, which I think really helped in making a good first impression.”

Amanda spent a lot of time working on launching an initiative for the Center of Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania. “We…set up a comprehensive marketing campaign for a new program that CILCPA had developed, known as Living Well With A Disability. The program is designed to be a one stop resource for people with disabilities that will enable them to accomplish anything from basic tasks to lifelong dreams, such as climbing a mountain.” Amanda helped develop “three TV commercials for the program, helped develop some of the text for their website, and wrote two public service announcements.” She was also instrumental in organizing the 100-person press conference that followed.

The Future: “This internship has given me the hands-on marketing experience that I need to enter a job in the marketing field after graduation. I have also met a lot of great contacts for the future.”

Tips from Amanda: “I would recommend using all of Dickinson's resources. There is so much that the career center does to help students get internships and jobs; it's a shame not to take advantage of that. I would definitely recommend starting your internship search early. Companies seem to be really impressed with students that take early initiative. Even if you don't meet the age requirement that they're seeking, you will still make an impression by getting in touch with them. I would also recommend talking with professors and other students to see what kind of internships they have heard about or participated in.”
