New Christian Group Interest Meeting

Are you interested in Christian life on campus? Have you always wanted a venue to explore your faith? Do you find yourself pondering the big questions in life with no one to talk to? Are you interested in experiencing community and serving others? Do you want to be part of something new and have your voice heard?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, come check out Ichthys, a new Christian group on campus. This meeting will be an informal, relaxed discussion where anyone can come and explore the possibility of being part of Ichthys. By attending this meeting there is by no means a commitment to becoming a member of Ichthys, but if you are interested, please do not hesitate to check it out.

Film: Cold Souls

Is your soul weighing you down? Paul Giamatti has found a solution. In this surreal comedy, an actor named Paul Giamatti stumbles upon an article in The New Yorker about a high-tech company that extracts, deep-freezes and stores people's souls. Paul very well might have found the key to happiness for which he's been searching. But complications arise when he is the unfortunate victim of "soul-trafficking." Giamatti's journey takes him all the way to Russia in hopes of retrieving his stolen soul from Nina, an ambitious but talentless soap-opera actress, played by Dina Korzun. Balancing a tightrope between deadpan humor and pathos, and reality and fantasy, Cold Souls is a true soul-searching comedy. Also starring David Strathairn and Emily Watson.

Hasia Diner is the Paul and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University, with joint appointment in the department of history and the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies. She is also director of the Goldstein Goren Center for American Jewish History. She has built her scholarly career around the study of American Jewish history, American immigration and ethnic history, and the history of American women. She has written about the ways in which American Jews in the early twentieth century reacted to the issue of race and the suffering of African Americans, and the process by which American Jews came to invest deep meaning in New York’s Lower East Side. Her most recent book addresses post-World War II American Jews, in the period up to 1962, and their intense engagement with the Holocaust. She has also written about other immigrant groups and the contours of their migration and settlement, including a study of Irish immigrant women and of Irish, Italian, and east European Jewish foodways.

Building Intellectual Bridges
William Greenlee, president and CEO of The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences will receive the 2009/10 Rush Award and give the presentation, "Building Intellectual Bridges." The goal of research and scholarship is the pursuit of new knowledge. That pursuit expands the intellectual endowment, but without a purpose and plan for the endowment’s use, new knowledge does not benefit society as much as it could. Scholars must take a leading role in the translation of discoveries and new knowledge into products, policies and guidance for the benefit of all. Film: Bright Star

London, 1818: a secret love affair begins between 23-year-old English poet John Keats and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne, an outspoken student of fashion. This unlikely pair start at odds: he thinking her a stylish minx; she unimpressed by literature in general. Keats's younger brother's illness draws them together, as Keats is touched by Fanny's efforts to help and agrees to teach her poetry. By the time Fanny's alarmed mother realizes what is happening, the relationship between Fanny and John has an unstoppable momentum. Intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other, the young lovers are swept into powerful new sensations. "I have the feeling as if I were dissolving," Keats wrote to Fanny. Together they ride a wave of romantic obsession that deepens as their troubles worsen. Sadly, Keats falls ill as well, and their love is doomed.

The Thursday, Dec 3, 2009 show will be followed by a discussion with Profs. Moffat and Nichols.
