1988-89 Mermaid Players Season

Fall in Love with the Theatre

Noises Off

By Michael Flynn

October 21,22,24,25

An English country home, complete with long staircase and seven (count' em) doors. A perfect setting for a farce? Yes, but with this play, that's only half of the story! Scenic designer Jim Drake brings you a set that turns inside out (or, more accurately, backside forward) to show you the mad backstage world of the theatre. Called "a valentine to the theatre" by New York critics, this play is comedy in grand theatrical form.

Life is a Dream

by Pedro Calderon

February 10,11,13,14

An enchanting story from the Golden Age of Spain, this play is a classic filled with thought, feeling, and fancy. Confined since his youth due to a suspicion of madness, Prince Segismundo is freed from his cell and allowed to rule his kingdom. His father reasons that if the experiment does not work, he can be returned to his cell with the explanation that it was all a dream. This optimistic classic is an engaging piece of theatre.

Guys and Dolls

Based on a story and characters by Damon Runyon Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser Book by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling

April 15,16,17,18

One of America's best-loved musicals! The highest of the high-rollers--Sky Masterson--is in town, and Nathan Detroit's "oldest established permanent floating crap game" needs a place to entertain Sky, Big Jule, Harry the Horse, and the rest of the guys. But Nathan's fiancee Adelaide has decided that a fourteen-year engagement is long enough! Sister Sarah and the mission are out to save all the gamblers. This tuneful assembly of Damon Runyon's most colorful characters is irresistible.
