1989-90 Mermaid Players Season

The Three Ages of Theatre

Kind Lady

by Edward Chodorov

October 27,28,30,31

Art collector Mary Herries is generous, sophisticated, and self-sufficient. But a simple act of giving ensares her in a web of conspiracy and menace so powerful that she gradually becomes a prisoner in her elegant London home. It's a night of knuckle-whitening suspense as you struggle along with Mary to devise a means of escape from the spooky band of con artists who terrorize her to the brink of madness.

The House of Blue Leaves

by John Guare

February 16,17,19,20

As fate would have it, zookeeper and would-be-singer-songwriter Artie Shaughnessy is not alone on the day that the Pope comes to New York. In fact, his apartment is teeming with colorful characters! His aptly-named wife, Bananas, his irrepressible girlfriend Bunny, his son the AWOL Marine, his long-lost friend the movie producer, and the lovely starlet (who's a little hard of hearing). And, just as things are getting goofy, there are the three nutty nuns who come in through the window to see the Pope on TV! Guare's madcap comedy took Off-Broadway off guard with its bittersweet edge in its Obie-winning 1970's debut, and won still greater acclaim in its Tony-winning 1980's Broadway revival.

As You Like It

by William Shakespeare

April 13,14,16,17

Bitterness and tyranny reign at the court of the usurping Duke Frederick, but love and healing are everywhere in the Forest of Arden. Noble young Orlando loves Rosalind. Audrey loves the waggish clown Touchstone. Silvius loves Phebe. Celia loves Oliver. And poor melancholy Jacques-the fellow who reminds us that "All the world's a stage"-just loves feeling sad. Complications ensue in the form of disguise, conspiracy, misguided affection, and misadventure, but the Forrest has endless power to transform confusion into harmony, and to nurture romance, romance, romance, romance!
