In the spring of 1998 students and faculty from our department participated for the second time in a production exchange program with the Berliner Arbeiter Theatre (BAT) which is the studio theatre program for the Ernst Busch School of Performing Arts in Berlin, Germany. In April, faculty and student artists from the BAT came to Dickinson and performed "Twelfth Night" by William Shakespeare in a German translation titled "Was Ihr Wollt" (which translates as 'What You Will' - Shakespeare's subtitle for the play) as well as a cabaret style presentation of songs by Bertolt Brecht. In early May, we flew to Berlin and played two performances of "Fool for Love" to standing room audiences at the BAT. This exciting opportunity was made possible by the generous support of both the administration of the college and the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation , an organization whose mission is to manifest Berlin's gratitude for the United States' efforts in support of their city after the second world war by hosting cultural exchange programs which bring Americans, particularly young Americans, to Berlin. The hospitality of The Checkpoint Charlie Foundation, as well as that of our hosts at the BAT, made our stay in Berlin a unique, memorable, and rewarding experience. Links below will take you to the program listings as well as a gallery of photographs from the production and comments on the trip by several of the students in the company. Coming soon will be additional pages showing and describing Theatre at Dickinson's most recent excellent adventure. Be sure to check back!
