THE THEATRE ARTS MAJOR:

This is a traditionally-structured disciplinary major consisting primarily of courses within our department. All theatre arts majors complete "core" courses in history, design/tech, dance, acting and literature. Majors then choose one of three areas upon which to focus the rest of their major courses. They are:

Acting/Directing Emphasis

MAJOR: THEATRE ARTS

All majors take a six course "core" requirement, which includes: 101, 203, 205, 210 (two sections which differ in their topics) and one course in dance technique: 200. A student may choose from three options to complete the major. For Acting/Directing Emphasis: 303, 305, 313 and two approved courses in dramatic literature, one of which must be substantially pre-1800 in its content. For Dance Emphasis: 102, 104, 204 and two course credits in dance technique. For Literature Emphasis: 313 and four approved courses in dramatic literature, at least one of which must have a pre-1800 focus. Students majoring in the department are expected to participate in co-curricular programs.

MINOR:

Six courses, including one approved course in dramatic literature, one approved course in studio performance, one course in dance technique, one section of 210 and two from the following courses: 101, 102, 104 or 313.

DECLARING A MINOR:

Students obtain a "declaration of major" form from Student Services, and have it signed by the departmental chair, the new major advisor, and the previous advisor. All appropriate records are then transferred to the new advisor and your major is recorded by the Registrar's Office. Declaration of inter-arts majors is encouraged during spring of freshman year or early in sophomore year; others should declare their majors by spring of sophomore year.
