Are there storage facilities available in the residence halls?

While some residence halls have small storage areas available for students during the school year, this space is limited and is used at students' own risk. There is no storage available for the summer session. However there are several self-storage companies close to campus, some of which will come and pick up belongings from students. We encourage students to bring only what they need upon initially coming to campus. Similarly, we encourage students to take home things that are no longer needed during periods such as spring break

What is the policy for room damages?

Students are responsible for the condition of their room and common areas. Normal wear and tear is expected and is taken in to account. Anything beyond normal wear and tear is charged to the residents of the room in question. More information on this can be found at the Community Governance/Responsibility link. For information on what materials to use when hanging pictures, posters, etc. please consult the Student Handbook.

Should I purchase Renters Insurance?

The college is not liable for the loss or theft of money or loss, theft or damage of personal property of residents.  Damages that result from unforeseeable maintenance issues (burst pipes, power failures, etc.) are the responsibility of the student.  The college does not carry insurance covering residents or their property.   Students are encouraged to carry their own personal property insurance, or make certain that they and their property are covered under their parent’s policy.  This is particularly applicable to items such as stereos, computers, bicycles, etc.

What furniture is supplied in the residence halls?

Each bedroom is supplied with one bed, mattress (extra long twin), desk, desk chair, dresser, closet, and book case per student. There is also one computer jack per student in each room, one phone line per room, and one cable TV line per room.

What size microwave and refrigerator are permitted in the Residence Halls?

You may not have a refrigerator larger than 4.1 cubic feet or a microwave oven using more than 700 watts in the residence halls.

Do I have access to cable TV?

Yes, each bedroom has one cable TV jack. Cable channels are paid for as part of the College fees. A complete list of channels will be available upon your arrival to campus.

Is there a telephone in my room?

All College operated residential facilities have telephone service in the room. Students may bring their own phone and answering machine (no phone unit is provided in the room) if they wish. Additionally, each student may receive their own PIN code for making long distance calls. When doing so, each student will receive a personalized bill for the calls made with their PIN code.

Are laundry rooms available in the residence halls?

Laundry facilities are available in all of the larger residence halls. Some apartment facilities and most small houses do not have their own laundry machines. The HUB has a large number of washers and dryers available for student use. Machines are set to run for free, though machines in the HUB require a card to activate them. The HUB cards are available to students free of charge.

Do I have to be on a meal plan?

Any student living in a College operated facility must be on a meal plan. For the best information on meal plans please visit the Dining Services site: http://www.dickinson.edu/dining/

Can I stay in my room during vacations and breaks?

College residential facilities remain open during mid-term pause, Thanksgiving break, and spring break. Students may remain in their rooms at these times at no extra charge but must register with the Residential Life Office. All College residential facilities close during winter break. Athletes and others required to be on campus in January may live on campus beginning in early January, however these students are required to live in the McKenney Suites or West Louther Street Townhouses. Only students participating in a College sponsored program or those working for a College office may live on campus during the break period in January.

Is it possible to arrive on campus before the residence halls officially open at the beginning of the semester or to stay in the residence halls after they have closed at the end of each semester?

Students are not permitted to arrive early or stay late unless they are working for a College office or are participating in a College program.

What is your pet policy?

Students may not keep or host pets in residential facilities.  The only exception is fish in a bowl or tank of no more than 20 gallons.  The College will not be responsible for the care of fish during break periods.

What are quiet hours?

To support your academic success, the College maintains both quiet hours and courtesy hours in all residences.  Standard quiet hours are Sunday through Thursday, 10:00pm until 8:00am the following morning and Friday and Saturday, midnight to 10:00am the following morning.  During quiet hours, noise should not be heard outside your individual room, suite or apartment.  Quiet hours are in effect 24 hours a day during Reading Period Days and Final Exam Days whereby any disturbance of the larger community is not permitted.

Are there Substance-Free Residential Facilities?

Students have the opportunity to apply to live on a healthy living floor or in a healthy living hall.  Students who choose to live in a healthy living community are asked to make a personal commitment to maintain and be responsible for established values and community standards.  Responsible decisions about alcohol, tobacco, nutrition, stress management and mental and physical health are expected by all community members.

How do I choose my room?

Room assignments for all returning students are done through the room selection lottery held during the Spring semester.  Returning students who have registered for courses for the following Fall semester may participate in the room selection process.  Students receive a randomly generated lottery number and select a room in order of their class year and lottery number.  More detailed information about room selection and housing options is available from the Office of Residential Life early in the Spring semester.

First-year students receive room assignments and the name(s) of roommate(s) by mail in late July.  First-year students are assigned rooms based on the information provided to the Office of Residential Life along with first-year seminar course requests.  First-year students generally are housed either in double or triple rooms and in facilities that are largely populated with other first-year students.  The Office of Residential Life does not allow incoming first-year students to request a roommate.
