Movers & Shapers

We asked, and you answered. And wow, did you answer. Last year we ran an ad in the magazine requesting comments about professors who helped to nurture alumni—directly or indirectly—in career paths. Our 20 respondents reflect upon teachers at Dickinson from early in the last century to those who still serve as mentors of students today. As you will see by the responses, it often is years, even decades, before one recognizes lasting influences. But as our correspondents reveal, it is never too late to pay tribute. Ray Phillips ’53 makes this touchingly clear in his opening essay on English Professor William R. Bowden.

If you look in vain for the professor who helped you to grow career-wise and feel inspired to comment, please send your write-up to:dsonmag@dickinson.edu. We will post comments that follow publication of the spring magazine on the magazine Web site.
