Service With a Smile
In every office, there is one person who keeps it all together. In
the athletics department at Dickinson College, that person is Cindy
Grove. Cindy has served the athletics department for more than 30 years.
In an office where everyone is on a different schedule and has different
needs—often very diverse needs—Cindy is the one who keeps
the balance.
In
addition to handling all of her administrative responsibilities, Cindy
also provides the coaches and staff with so much more. She plays a major
role in planning meetings, banquets and other social gatherings. She
helps to collect tickets at football games and is sure to let everyone
know when someone on the staff has a birthday, a baby, an anniversary
or any other significant happening.
Cindy does many things that no one sees or may even realize. She is
the first one many students meet when they come into the office. She
greets each student and tries to get to know all the athletes that come
through the office to let them know she cares. She loves to create banners
for teams going to playoffs and championships and puts forth the extra
effort to make everyone feel like they are part of one big family.
Cindy could not do her job alone, and each year she relies on a student
worker to assist her. She has always had great people, and for the last
three years she has had one of the best: Jen Voltz ’07.
Jen started working for Cindy her sophomore year and became a valuable
asset to the department. A dedicated worker, Jen was always willing
to go the extra step. She helped coaches when they were shorthanded,
covered events during the semester breaks and even filled in for Cindy
when she was out of the office.
Jen
has truly made the most of her Dickinson experience. In addition to
working in the athletic department she was a standout volleyball player,
earning four varsity letters and was twice selected to the All-Centennial
Conference team. She led the Red Devils to a pair of conference playoff
appearances and was one of the top setters in program history.
Jen had a great senior season, setting a school record with 931 assists.
She finished her career second all-time with 2,642 assists, in ranks
in the top 10 for service aces and blocks. She ranks second in career
hitting percentage, recording over 400 kills as a setter.
It is hard to determine whether her biggest assists came on the court
or in the office. In either case, Jen proved to be a valuable asset
to volleyball program, the athletic department and the college.
