Student government elections occur twice a year and are managed by the Student Senate Constitutional Affairs and Elections Committee (CAEC). Please contact the Student Senate (senate@dickinson.edu) with any questions or concerns.

Offices Up for Election in Fall 2008

Student Senate Officers: Senate Secretary

All-College Committee Senators: 1 Academic Programming and Standards Committee Senator (Class of 2012 is not eligible), 4 Enrollment and Student Life Committee Senators (1 from each class), 1 Planning and Budget Committee Senator (Class of 2012 is not eligible)

Fall 2008 Election Timeline

August 24: Candidate packets and petitions available

August 31: Completed petitions and digital copy of letter of intent are due to the
Student Senate Office and senate@dickinson.edu no later than
8:00 p.m. All candidates/proxies must stop by the Student Senate
Office on Sunday evening between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. to meet
with a representative of CAEC

September 1: Campaign period starts

September 3: The Dickinsonian election special is published

September 7: Polls open online at Noon

September 8: Polls close at 11:59 p.m. Election results are available online
immediately afterwards.

Position Descriptions


CLASS OFFICERS
Candidacy requires 75 student signatures from your respective class

Class Officers are a group of students that plan extracurricular events for their class during the academic year. The Class Officers in particular are expected to establish a sense of unity within the class and educate the class about the important role alumni play in the future of the college.

Class President
The Class President presides over weekly meetings, prepares agenda items, and delegates tasks as necessary. The Class President shall strive to develop good organizational and communication skills and display leadership qualities in representing the class, as well as acting as liaison to the campus community on behalf of the class. The Class President must attend every Senate meeting (every Tuesday evening, 6-8) as well as the Student Senate Retreat on Saturday, September 13, 2008.

Class Vice President
The Class Vice-President shall assist the Class President and carry out the responsibilities of the Class President in case of an absence. The Class Vice President shall coordinate all programming details for class events, recruit a class historian to keep records of class events, coordinate the development of a class slideshow, and work closely with the Class Secretary in publishing a class newsletter.

Class Treasurer
The Class Treasurer is responsible for all financial transactions of the class. The Class Treasurer shall correspond regularly with the Senate Treasurer and the Cashier’s Officer to manage the finances of the class. The Class Treasurer shall represent the class in Student Senate Finance Committee and budget hearings. The Class Treasurer shall report on the class’ finances to the other class officers.

Class Secretary
The Class Secretary will record and distribute minutes from officer meetings, prepare all correspondence for the class, and coordinate publicity for class events. The Class Secretary shall assist the Class Vice President in the development of a class newsletter.

Senior Alumni Representative (Class of 2009 only)
This position is held by a member of the senior class who is elected by classmates during the fall semester of the senior year. The Alumni Representative serves a 3-year term on the Alumni Council, with full voice and vote, and has the opportunity to serve for an additional 3-year term. The Council is made up of 40 alumni who serve as a voice for all Dickinson College alumni. The Council meets three times a year on campus and interacts with a variety of campus faculty and staff including the President of the College, members of his senior staff and a variety of other administrators, faculty members and students. The Alumni Representative shall attend all Council meetings and will serve on one of the four sub-committees of the Council. The committees meet on the same day as the general Council meetings. The student may be asked to participate in meetings and/or conference calls between Council meetings as needed. It is hoped that the student will participate freely in Council discussions and voice his/her personal opinions on various discussion topics, as well as the opinions of the student body in general. Topics of discussion may include academic life, student life, alumni interaction with students, volunteer opportunities for alumni, fundraising opportunities/needs for the College, etc. The student should use this opportunity also to interact closely with all members of the Council, to network with them and to bring them up to date on campus life.


STUDENT SENATE POSITIONS

The Student Senate is a representative body responsible for administering funds collected from the Student Activities Fee, providing assistance to clubs, overseeing all aspects of student life, addressing student grievances, and maintaining healthy relationships with the faculty and administration. Senate also manages the student government elections, as well as implements various community service and outreach efforts.

Class Senator
—Candidacy requires 50 student signatures from your respective class

A Class Senator represents the constituents of his/her respective class. All Senators are required to attend weekly Student Senate meetings (every Tuesday evening from 6-8) and serve on at least one Senate Standing Committee. They also must attend the Student Senate Retreat on Saturday, September 13, 2008. There will be eight Senators per class, plus the class president.

All-College Committee Senators

All-College Committee Senators are the student representatives on the various official college committees. They will serve alongside college faculty, staff, and administrators. All-College Committee Senators must attend their weekly committee meetings and the Student Senate meetings (every Tuesday evening from 6-8). They also must attend the Student Senate Retreat on Saturday, September 13, 2008.

The following positions are currently up for election this spring:

Academic Programming and Standards Committee (APSC)
Candidacy requires 50 student signatures from any class year

This Committee studies and evaluates all matters associated with the academic programming of the college, and advises the Dean on the distribution of monetary and personal resources. This Committee is composed of six faculty or academic professionals, three students, the Provost and Dean of the College, the Vice President for Enrollment and College Relations, the Associate Provost for Curriculum and Registrar, the Director of Library and Academic Technology, Executive Director of Global Education, and the Director of Writing. One Candidate will be voted on in the Fall 2008 elections.

Enrollment and Student Life Committee (ESLC)

(ESLC meets every Tuesday from 3 to 4 PM. Be sure your class schedule allows for this)
Candidacy requires 50 student signatures from your respective class

This committee is responsible for evaluating student satisfaction and engagement. This Committee is comprised of four faculty or academic professionals, four students (one for each class), the Vice President of Enrollment and College Relations, the Dean of Admissions, the Director of Financial Aid, the Dean of Students, and the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment & Institutional Research. One Candidate from each class will be voted on in the Fall 2008 elections.

Planning and Budget Committee (P & B)
Candidacy requires 50 student signatures from any class year

This Committee is responsible for discussing major issues of institutional policy and planning. It also shall examine incomes and expenditures experienced in past budgets and make recommendations for projected budgets. This Committee is comprised of five faculty or academic professional, one student plus the Student Senate President and the Student Senate Treasurer, the Provost and Dean of the College, the Vice President and Treasurer, the Vice President for Enrollment and College Relations, the Vice President for Campus Operations, the Vice President for Development, the Vice President for Library and Information Services, the Dean of Students, the Executive Assistant to the President, the Controller, and the Assistant Controller. One Candidate will be voted on in the Fall 2008 elections.

STUDENT SENATE OFFICERS
Candidacy requires 300 student signatures from any class year

The Senate is managed by the Senate President, Senate Vice President, Senate Treasurer, Senate Secretary, Multi-Organizational Board (MOB) Chair, and the Senate Standing Committee Chairs. Officer attendance is mandatory at Senate Meetings (6-8pm on Tuesday evenings), Cabinet meetings and the Senate Retreat on Saturday, September 13, 2008.

The Senate Officer positions up for election this fall:

Senate Secretary
The Secretary is responsible for recording the minutes at all meetings of the Student Senate and the Cabinet, recording attendance for all meetings, managing the Record of the Senate for the year, accepting and distributing all written legislation submitted to the Senate, and emailing the minutes to members within seventy-two (72) hours after the Senate meeting. Candidates for Secretary must have served at least one year in Senate.

Information for Abroad Students
If you are interested in running for office from abroad you will need to find someone on campus to serve as your proxy candidate. He or she will circulate your petitions and personally campaign for you. He or she must sign the Candidate Agreement Form, since he or she will have to adhere to campaign guidelines. You will be responsible for emailing your digital copy of your letter of intent, as well as a confirmation that you understand the conditions listed in the Candidate Agreement Form, to the Student Senate (senate@dickinson.edu).

GET INVOLVED
Student Senate is a great source of information about the College especially in the areas of finance, policies and the College curriculum. We encourage students to take advantage of Senate by joining us for a Senate meeting. Our weekly meetings are held Tuesday from 6pm-8pm in the Temple of Minerva (Denny 317).
