Recognition of New Greek Organizations

As student interests and demographics change, it is reasonable to anticipate requests for recognition of additional greek-letter organizations and societies. A basic set of criteria will guide decisions about adding new groups in a way that supports and protects the fundamental educational mission of the college and that balances the interests of the college, the current greek system, and the interests of unaffiliated students. A request is simply that -- a request for discussion. The college is not actively pursuing expansion of greek life, but creating a framework by which requests that come forward might best be considered.

Process to file request:

Expression of interest must be initiated in the form of a proposal to the Dean of Students. Such a proposal must provide a well-reasoned rationale that articulates:

  • Compelling reason for a new group that clearly advances the College’s mission and priorities
  • Goals for new group
  • Plan/outlook for membership sustainability
  • Level of interest

The all-college Committee on Enrollment and Student Life (ESLC) is responsible for considering requests for recognition of new groups. ESLC comprises students, faculty and administrators. ESLC is charged with reviewing and making recommendations to the faculty and to the president about all non-academic and non-curricular matters affecting student life on campus.

ESLC will act in an advisory role in expansion matters, making recommendation to the Dean of Students who will be vested with the final decision. As appropriate and deemed necessary, ESLC will consult with constituents that might be influenced by the outcome of decisions, for example the presidents of the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils, greek advisor, or other relevant bodies or individuals.

Only upon favorable review of a proposal by ESLC and adoption by the Dean of Students may the process of colonization of a new organization begin. At such time that approval is granted, the process will be carried forward by the staff member assigned to advising the greek system.

Statement on Unrecognized Groups

Dickinson College has determined that unrecognized greek organizations run counter to the mission and residential program of the college. Students should be aware that joining a fraternity or sorority that has been expelled, suspended, or is otherwise not in good standing with or recognized by the college carries the risk of adverse consequences for the student individually, The typical consequence for such membership or affiliation is suspension or expulsion from Dickinson College.
